a. Take a few minutes to reflect on your strengths and weaknesses as a teacher.
Teaching Strengths
  • Getting to know the students likes and dislikes outside of school which allows me to use examples which the students care about to help them grasp the material easier.
  • Feeling comfortable in front of the class, I don't get flustered by questions the students ask and am genuinely excited about what I am teaching and try to relay this feeling to the students.
  • I have a binder which is holding all of my daily lessons, homework, tests and quizzes, and ideas I have during my student teaching. I am organized with my grades as well as my daily plans.
  • I use technology such as power point and virtual labs involving the computer to enhance technology use in the classroom.
Teaching Weaknesses
  • I would like to learn more about the smart board
  • Learning different techniques for classroom management, as of now I am doing fine with it, but I am in a really good situation at North Smithfield Middle School and haven't really been tested by any students.
  • Thinking of labs which involve inquiry and enhance student learning. Many of the labs I do are simply like following a recipe, but I would like to involve inquiry assignments more in my science class.
  • Really understanding if the the students are understanding the concepts which I am teaching. Even though the students are saying they understand the material it is crucial to do certain learning checkpoints to be sure that they are understanding the material.

b. Describe some of your students' strengths and needs that you have noticed so far.
Students Strengths
  • The students are all for the most part respectful to the great school community which they are a part of as well as respectful to their classmates and peers.
  • A lot of the students are eager to learn, even though science may not be their favorite subject, they understand that it is part of the school curriculum and a crucial part to them exceeding in school.
  • The students participate in class, which helps create a great classroom environment.
Students Needs
  • Sometimes the students work is inconsistent, and students which are capable of great work don't always seem to put the top amount of effort which they can.
  • Sometimes the students need to be reminded many times about due dates of assignments or when tests and quizzes will be.
  • Some of the students are in lower math levels than the other students which causes them to have more difficulty with some of the mathematical word problems which have been implemented in my science class.

c. Download and complete this URI Self Evaluation form based on one of the lessons you taught last week. Be sure to write down specific evidence from either your lesson plan or your memory of your enactment for each assessment you give. Use a highlighter to identify areas of your teaching/lesson that were either below standard or that you feel needs improvement.

a. Review your school improvement document(s). (If you forgot them, download a SALT visit.)

b. Synthesize your review by completing the following table as best your can:

What is the need?
How will improvement help your students?
How will improvement help your school?
RIBT Standard/Element Addressed?
1.
Standard based education
If the students have more standard based learning they will definitely be more successful on their NECAP scores. Many teachers often cover the topics they enjoy teaching more in depth than other topics. It is important for the teachers to try to cover all of the standards throughout the year because this will be beneficial to the students learning.
Improved NECAP scores
11.1 - teachers maintain standards that require them to act in the best interest and needs of the students.

Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
  • measurable/observable
  • should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
  • should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
  • linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.

In the space below, describe your professional development goal. In a second paragraph, use the information above to provide a rationale for your goal by explaining the personal need that it will address as well as how addressing this goal benefits your students and your school.

I. Professional Development Goal

My professional development goal is to make my teaching strategies more standard oriented. I feel that if the students are participating in more standard based learning that It will help them succeed in not only future levels of science but also on the NECAP testing as well. The students need to get a chance to learn all of the standards which are suppose to be covered throughout their time in middle school. It is important that these students cover all of these standards because they will need this knowledge to be successful in the high school level science. This standard base learning will also help review which topics will be necessarily for the students to comprehend to be successful ont heir NECAP testing which directly reflects their science based knowledge from their middle school years.
The personal need which this goal will adress is helping advance the students knowledge based on the standards which are given to the teachers. The standards have been created for a reason, and I feel that it is important for all teachers to understand the importance these standards are to the success of students in later levels of schooling. The standards have been created by former teachers and administrators who understand what is crucial for the students to understand for their future success. Just because I feel that teaching needs to be more standard oriented doesn't mean that it has to be all book work or giving notes to the students. Learning can still be inquiry based or given through demonstrations or class discussions, it is just important that the demonstrations are based on the standards which are important to be completed.

Now that you have a PD goal, think about what type of learning opportunities you will participate in to address your needs. Use these links to investigate learning options:

Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.

II. Professional Development Plan

Furthering Education - To obtain my goal to create a new standard based learning environment in my classroom, I will be able to take part in teaching workshops and seminars throughout Rhode Island. I will definitely use Dr. Fogleman, and my Cooperating teacher (Mrs. Hannah) as guides to helping me find such seminars and workshops which are based on curriculum and standards. Another thing I will do to help myself become more standard oriented is go to Providence College to get my masters in Education Administration. I feel that if I receive my masters in Education that I would have a more prominent role in trying to inflict standards throughout the schools I would be working at. I would like to become a Principal or Vice Principal this way that I can preach teaching with standards to other teachers in my schools.

Self Education - I will be trying to improve my own classroom by teaching based on standards. One way to help myself with being sure that I concentrate on standards is in the beginning of the year map out all the topics which need to be covered throughout the school year. I will link these topics to the GSE's that are from the Rhode Island standards. I will be being sure to concentrate on the standards which need to be covered and being sure to cover all the topics neccesary. It is important as a teacher to teach all of the standards int he curriculum, but not just the topics which I enjoy teaching.
